Round 2 Preview

What a round of footy and netball we have in store for round eight of the SS&A OMFNL with a couple of old rival matches in the footy the headline acts.

Just one game separates the top five teams, the gap to sixth-placed Lavington and seventh-placed North Albury is two games and a fair chunk of percentage.

It’s been a long time since a Wodonga v Albury clash has had so much at stake in a home and away round as the clash at the John Flower Oval has on offer.

Wodonga (2nd) by less than 1% over third-placed Albury with both sides on five wins and a loss. The Doggies suffered its first loss in eleven matches last week, while Albury defeated the Raiders.

Wodonga has named Jack Yelland for his first game, while Albury star forward Jacob Conlan returns after missing the last three weeks.

Angus Baker has also been selected after missing two games with a finger dislocation. In bad news coach Jordan Taylor hurt a shoulder in his reserve grade return last week.

Old rivals from past decades Wangaratta Rovers and Yarrawonga meet in another mouth-watering contest with the Pigeons despite having the bye last week moved to the top of the table.

In the early seventies, Rovers beat Yarrawonga in three grand finals in four years – the rivalry and memories remain amongst the supporters of both clubs.

The Pigeons welcome back Michael Gibbons for his first game since he injured his hamstring on Easter Sunday, they won’t have Mark Whiley due to a calf injury.

Harry Wheeler will finally get to serve his one-week suspension incurred from the Myrtleford game. Rovers have rushed Jace McQuade straight into the team for his first game in 2023.

North Albury has the bye and for other teams outside the top five, a win is absolutely paramount if any changes are to be had inside the current five.

Lavington with two wins must defeat Raiders at the Lavington Sportsground to keep alive its fading hopes of finals action.

The Panthers just have not been able to kick winning scores with only once kicking double-figure goals that has also been compounded by terrible inaccuracy in front of goal.

Wodonga Raiders have shown in its last two matches against Wangaratta and Albury that their best football is dangerous and very competitive.

With too much at stake and the excitement around the debut of Charlie Sanson the son of club legend Tim Sanson, they should celebrate win number three.

Wangaratta will make the trip to Myrtleford with coach Ben Reid returning from suspension and young gun Tyler Norton back in for Brad Melville who has VFL duties with Richmond.

The Magpies have strung together four wins in a row after losing its first three matches – confidence and stability along with a steely resolve in the playing group make them a formidable opponent.

The Saints were disappointed to have left Bunton Park without a win last week – they will still be missing Sam Martyn and will need a huge lift across the board if they are to threaten the Magpies.

In netball action, the O&M 17 and under side has qualified for the Victorian Association Championships finals day in Melbourne, joining the already qualified Open’s side.

The Gold and Blacks made it to the grand final before losing to Goulburn Valley 21-12, the O&M despite the loss qualified with the top two teams progressing.

Albury should be able to keep alive its top-five hopes by defeating Wodonga who will be full of confidence after notching its first win last week.

Top of the table Yarrawonga who have not played for 21 days will be a red-hot favourite when they take on bottom side Wangaratta Rovers.

The remaining two games will have a massive bearing on the make-up of the top five with 2 v 3 and 4 v 5 playing each other with all four teams separated by just one win.

Myrtleford gets another wonderful opportunity to test its credentials when they host Wangaratta – the winner of this clash will just about lock away the double chance.

Lavington was super impressive in defeating Wangaratta last week and will have another big challenge against the ever-improving Wodonga Raiders.

Both sides are two games clear of sixth-placed Albury – the outstanding goal-shooting prowess of Christine Oguche should swing the match Lavington’s way.
