Round 5 Preview

Here we go for round five of the 2023 SS&A OMFNL season and in the football, the field looks to be an absolute beauty with all four games close calls.

Two rounds remain before the interleague clash with all squads being named for both football and netball – round five is a chance to impress for all.

Things have been pretty hot at the tribunal with hefty suspensions being handed out to Ben Reid (Wangaratta) for three weeks and Josh Muraca (Myrtleford) for four weeks.

Lavington has received a massive boost ahead of its road trip to Yarrawonga with 2022 best and fairest Billy Glanvill being named for his first game of 2023.

Glanvill joined West Adelaide in the SANFL last year but has returned to the border and will play in a huge game for the Panthers.

Lavington are locked into a finals battle with both Wangaratta and Myrtleford and a win over a top-three side would reignite their finals aspirations.

Yarrawonga after losing to Albury in round one has regained its momentum from 2022 with three straight wins. Their on-ball division has been in sensational form.

Wodonga will be chasing its fifth win in a row for the season and it’s ninth since round 15 last year when they host Myrtleford at John Flower Oval.

The Bulldogs have improved every outing and when coach Jordan Taylor and midfielder Jack Yelland return, they could find another level to match the likes of Yarrawonga and Albury.

They will need to be on their toes against the Saints who were outstanding against Rovers last week to gain its first win of the season under new coach Craig Millar.

They play with bravado when moving the ball and have found a new lease of life and style under Millar that makes for great viewing.

The Albury Sportsground will be the venue for a massive clash between powerhouse teams Albury and Wangaratta with both teams at different ends of the spectrum after the first month.

The Tigers are unbeaten with three wins while the Magpies have just one win from their four games and will miss coach Ben Reid for the next three matches.

They do have one huge inclusion with Brad Melville named – the 2017 premiership star is with Richmond VFL side who have a bye this weekend. Dane Porter also returns from injury.

The Pies’ record at the Albury Sportsground is horrendous with last year’s win in round 14 the first since 2008 at the ground.

Albury has included star recruit George Horlin- Smith for his first match since round one at Yarrawonga. The Tigers have not named co-captain Jimmy Grills or Elliot Powell.

Perhaps the biggest and closest contest for the round will be at Bunton Park, North Albury when Wodonga Raiders travel across the Murray with both sides searching for their first win.

In a genuine toss of the coin, the home ground advantage may swing it the Hoppers’ way or will the inclusion of midfield beast Cam Ellis-Yolmen give Raiders the ascendancy?

North Albury has been super competitive in the first half of all its games but badly needs to address a chronic second-half fade-out tendency if they are to win.

The battle between the inform Josh Minogue at centre-half forward and Raiders inform defender Alex Daly could decide the outcome – or will it be a draw?

A highlight of the netball matches will be the 200th club game at Yarrawonga for Hannah Symes as well as her 100th A Grade game.

Her stellar career is littered with highlights that include – playing in seven A grade grand finals and winning five of them, she has also won a B Grade premiership.

Symes won the league’s highest honour in 2016 the Toni Wilson Medal and has won best and fairest in A, B and C grades in her journey that commenced in 2006 as a 13 yr old.

The Pigeons should celebrate a win when they play Lavington who beat the Pigeons twice in 2022 home and away matches.

North Albury and Wodonga Raiders have a crucial clash with both sides needing a win to chase the fifth spot in the finals.

Myrtleford will continue its unbeaten start to the season when they will be too strong for the improving Bulldogs.

Albury will get a really good gauge of where their season is at when they host Wangaratta who will be a definite top-three side.

The OM Live Optus O&M TV Netball game of the round will be at Yarrawonga. The football games will be at Yarrawonga and the Albury Sportsground.
