Round 18 preview

Round eighteen already! Hard to believe the home and away season is just about done and dusted in the SS&A OMFNL 2023 season.

Finals venues have been allocated with week one of finals being a big weekend in Wangaratta with both clubs hosting finals.

The WJ Findlay Oval will host the qualifying final with Wangaratta to play either Albury or Yarrawonga pending round eighteen results.

While on Sunday the action is across the road at Norm Minns Oval where Wodonga will make its first finals appearance in 14 years against most likely Rovers.

The top five in netball are locked in and most likely the finishing positions as well – it would take a big upset and some strange results for this to change.

Wodonga Raiders are the only side that could move into the top three – for this to happen they first of all need to beat fifth-placed Myrtleford by a big margin.

Lavington would then need to be beaten by Albury and with a big margin as currently Raiders are 7% behind the Panthers.

It is hard to see this eventuating with the Saints at home starting a slight favourite against the Raiders and Lavington a firm favourite to beat Albury.

The final round of football will be highlighted by Lavington’s Luke Garland playing his 250th senior game at the club after debuting as a 16-year-old in 2006.

A decorated career includes three-time club B & F winner, captaining the OMFL, and premiership-winning captain of Lavington in 2019 a role he had for seven years.

His beloved Panthers will be at home to Albury where they will be hoping to repeat its performance against the Tigers in round nine where Albury won a thriller by two points.

The Tigers are currently five percentage points behind Yarrawonga and will need to win comfortably if they are to threaten the Pigeons’ minor premiership aspirations.

Yarrawonga makes the trip to Martin Park in Wodonga to take on the Bulldogs – a venue that will most likely see the Pigeons return a fortnight later in the second semi-final.

Yarrawonga was super impressive last week against Rovers and should be further strengthened with the return from injury of Mark Whiley and Bailey Fraunfelder.

The Bulldogs got smashed by injury last week in its 77-point loss to Albury with three players Matt Soroczynski, Jack Yelland and Rhys Venturoni all suffering hamstring injuries.

The Dogs have a safe buffer of not having to win to stay in finals and with Tom Johnson and Michael Driscoll set to return for the elimination final they will take a cautious approach.

North Albury will make the trip down the Hume to take on Wangaratta Rovers full of confidence after a great finish to the season winning five of its last eight matches.

Even the most ardent and one-eyed Hopper supporter would think their task to beat Rovers by 136 points is a bridge too far! They are one game and 21 % behind the Rovers.

With close to a full-strength side they have a great opportunity to finish the season with the same amount of wins as both teams who will contest the elimination final.

Rovers just like Wodonga encountered injury problems in round 17 and will be going into damage control as they wait for injured soldiers to return.

The final match of the round should be a beauty with Myrtleford and Wodonga raiders clashing at the Mcnamarra Reserve with the loser taking the wooden spoon.

Both sides have just one win each with the home side’s sole win way back on April 29 against Rovers and the Raiders win was at home last time the two teams clashed in round nine.

The Saint’s form at home is so much stronger and with the Raiders still missing injured on baller Cam Ellis-Yolmen the Alpine Saints should take the points.

The match of the round in the netball will also be at Myrtleford when the Saints and Raiders clash in what will most likely be a dress rehearsal for next Sunday’s elimination final.

Yarrawonga after hammering Rovers last week will have its final game for a fortnight when they play Wodonga – the Pigeons the defending premier will be back at the same venue for the second semi-final.

Lavington will be keen to reverse the result of the last time they played Albury when the Tigers upset the Panthers by 2 goals.

North Albury should post its fourth win of the season when they take on bottom-placed Wangaratta Rovers who have had just one win.
