Round 2 Preview

The final make-up of the top five in football has been settled with two rounds remaining in the SS&A OMFNL 2023 season.

With the top five locked away the only interest remaining inside the top five will be who out of Yarrawonga or Albury will take top spot.

Wodonga will make its first appearance in a senior OMFNL finals series since 2009, the 14 years finals drought is the longest in the league’s history.

The Bulldogs have jumped up into fourth position, relegating Wangaratta Rovers to fifth, after beating the Rovers at the WJ Findlay Oval on Saturday.

Needing to win one of its last three matches to ensure finals the Bulldog’s hunger to get the task sorted early was evident in the impressive 15-point win.

Matt Wilson, Jet Cassidy, Josh Mathey and Adam Jorgensen were the standouts for Wodonga, while for Rovers Sam Murray, Brodie Filo and Jack Gerrish were the best.

North Albury continued its improvement and status within the league by defeating Myrtleford at Myrtleford by three points in a cracking contest.

Not much separated the sides all afternoon and in the end, it was the class of Hoppers playing coach Tim Broomhead that helped the visitors over the line.

Unfortunately, the victory won’t be enough to keep the Hoppers season alive with the Wodonga win all but certainly finalising the top five.

North Albury has the bye this weekend and to make finals would have to thrash Rovers in the final round at Rovers and hope that this week Rovers get hammered at Yarrawonga.

North Albury trail Rovers and Wodonga by one game and 28 % (Rovers) and 42% to Wodonga. A victory in the final round would see them with eight win/eight loss season.

An undermanned Wangaratta finished off Lavington’s season with an impressive 34-point win with Cal Moore playing a starring role with ten goals.

Moore was unstoppable playing out of the goal square with his strength and agility terrorising the Panther’s defence kicking five goals in the first half and then five in the last quarter.

Daniel Sharrock, Hunter Gottschling, Michael Bordingon and Harrison Hewitt were outstanding while ruckman Chris Knowles outpointed Panthers big man Tim Hanna.

The Panther’s lack of a key forward and ability to convert from the 40-metre range hurt them again with the class of Ewan Mackinlay (3 goals) and Jake O’Brien showing through.

Albury has boosted its chances of taking the minor premiership with a convincing and percentage-boosting win over Wodonga Raiders at Birallee Park.

The Tigers despite missing several of its more experienced players won by 88 points and drawing level on points with Yarrawonga and narrowing the percentage break to just under 7%.

Brydan Hodgson with 38 possessions was best afield for Albury and along with other midfielders Elliot Powell, Jake Gaynor and Riley Bice gave the forwards plenty of supply.

Ben Kelly and Jessie Wilson both booted for 4 goals for Albury. Raiders after kicking just one goal to half time booted five goals in an enterprising third term.

The upsets continued in the netball with Myrtleford coming back to earth with a shock loss to an energetic North Albury going down 51-46.

After a big win away from home at Yarrawonga last week the Saints were caught off guard by the brilliant Hoppers and dropped out of the top three.

Lavington made its way back into the top three with a five-goal win over second-place Wangaratta. The Panthers were led by Christine Oguche shooting 37 of the Panther’s 39 goals.

The Panthers have shown they have the ability to defeat any team and will get a chance to secure the double chance this week away to Wodonga Raiders.

Raiders survived a huge scare against the Tigers winning 45-43. They have their double chance destiny in their own hands over the final two rounds with games against Lavington and Myrtleford.

Wodonga completed a great day for the club with its second win of the season defeating Rovers 48-45 and ensuring the Hawks will finish with the wooden spoon.

Top of the table Yarrawonga look certain to finish minor premiers with its last two matches against Rovers and Wodonga, while Wangaratta with a final round bye face Myrtleford this Saturday.
