Round 16 Preview

Three rounds left in the SS&A OMFNL with a thrilling final race on in both football and netball with top five finishing positions anyone’s guess.

While the makeup of the netball top five has been known for a month the last position in the football is on a knife edge with Wodonga, North Albury and Lavington still in the race.

First up let’s look at what 4th placed Rovers can achieve – they need to win one of its last three matches to be assured of playing finals.

They play Wodonga this week at home, then are away to Yarrawonga and finish off the season with a home game against North Albury.

If they were to lose its next two matches the final game against North Albury could be to decide who plays finals – if North Albury beat Myrtleford this week.

The Hoppers who as mentioned travel to Myrtleford this week must win this week as they have the bye in round 17 – their percentage is over 30% behind any team in the top five.

Wodonga currently in fifth place needs to win one of its last three matches to guarantee finals. They do have a tough draw with all three games against top-four teams.

Their game away to Rovers is their best chance of getting a win with the final two games against Albury (away) and then Yarrawonga at home.

If Wodonga were to lose the last three games, they would then be relying on the results of other games to survive – its good percentage does give them an advantage.

Lavington is still a mathematical chance of playing finals, but one thinks the loss to North Albury last Saturday has made it a bridge too far.

If they were to win its last three matches they would make finals – the tricky bit is its run home with tough games at home to Wangaratta this week and Albury final round the big challenge.

In between these games, they play Raiders away – they would need to win this and boost its percentage to give cover if they were to lose against either Albury or Wangaratta.

The Panthers could still make it with two wins if North only won one game and Wodonga lost all three and had its percentage decimated in the process.

Wangaratta has the bye in the final round and would need to win one of its last two games against Lavington and Myrtleford (home) to ensure they finish in third place.

This would work well with its long injury list and playing group getting a week off before finals and freshening up with a qualifying final clash with either Albury or Yarrawonga.

The top spot is up for grabs with Yarrawonga currently a game clear of Albury and around 15% – however, the Pigeons have the bye this week and Albury plays bottom-placed Raiders.

A big win over the Raiders and the Tigers will close that percentage margin and could even go past it. This would then see the battle for the minor premiership turn into a percentage battle royale.

The match of the round in netball will see second-placed Wangaratta take on 4th placed Lavington with the Panthers needing a win to chase the double chance dream.

The Magpie’s incentive is massive as well knowing a win could take them to the top spot as they trail Yarrawonga by less than one per cent.

Wodonga and Wangaratta Rovers have plenty at stake in their clash with the winner almost certain of avoiding the wooden spoon.

Raiders have a must-win game over Albury if they are to retain hope of winning back the double chance as they are equal on 36 points with Myrtleford and Lavington.

The final game will see Myrtleford at home start favourite against the dangerous Hoppers, who on their day can be a very dangerous opponent.
