Finals week 1 review

FINALS WEEK ONE REVIEW

Brilliant spring sunshine and healthy crowds greeted week one of football and netball action in the SS&A OMFNL on both Saturday and Sunday.

Four teams remain in the race for the premiership cup with Wangaratta Rovers eliminated by a fired-up Wodonga in the elimination final at Norm Minns Oval on Sunday.

Playing in their first final in fourteen years the Bulldog’s hunger shone through outclassing the Hawks with a seven-goal to one third-quarter knockout blow in a 40-point win.

Led by best afield Adam Jorgensen the Bulldogs kicked the seven goals in under twenty minutes with Noah Spiteri the surprise packet with four goals.

Angus Baker was at his best with 38 possessions in midfield for Wodonga, with his check-side goal from the boundary sending the Wodonga supporters into raptures of delight.

Ruckman Bailey Griffith played his best game since returning from overseas, while Josh Mathey and Harry Kitching were their usual honest best.

The Rover’s struggle was highlighted by their ability to kick just one goal in each of the first three quarters. Cody Schutt, Jace McQuade and Will Nolan were the best.

The Bulldogs now progress to this Sunday’s first semi-final against Wangaratta who were far from disgraced in their 24-point loss to Albury at the WJ Findlay Oval on Saturday.

Albury has advanced to this Saturday’s second semi-final against Yarrawonga with the winner straight into the 2023 grand final at Lavington on September 24.

Wangaratta with Michael Newton kicking three first-quarter goals and its midfield on top led by Dan Sharrock led at quarter time by two points.

It was the second term that Albury took control with Riley Bice, Anthony Miles and Jake Gaynor taking control of the midfield after the Pies had stretched their lead to 16 points.

By halftime, the Tigers had on the back of five straight goals taken the lead by 15 points. Three goals apiece in the third term had Albury 17 points clear at the final break.

The Tigers controlled the game with a great finals tempo to secure its first finals win since the 2018 grand final. Bice finished with four goals and Gaynor three.

Jacob Conlan after a slow start showed his class with five goals. Hamish Gilmore did a terrific job on Cal Moore keeping him to three goals.

Michael Newton finished with five goals in an excellent return from injury after having missed six weeks. Exciting Joe Berry kicked three goals including one gem from a mark and run.

Plenty of upside for the Magpies with the likely return this week of Hunter Gottschling, Matt Grossman and Harry Hewitt.

Lavington once again showed its potential to be a serious premiership contender with an impressive 53-45 win over Wangaratta in the qualifying final.

The Panthers after leading by ten goals at half time had to hold off a Magpies comeback before easing away with Christine Oguche netting 46 goals.

Ange Demamiel was outstanding for the Panthers creating many turnovers, while for the Pies Issy Byrne and Ellie Cooper were excellent in midcourt.

Amanda Umanski after shooting 19 goals was forced off at the last change with a knee injury. Umanski is on return from a serious ACL knee injury last year.

Lavington has a super impressive record this season against the top two teams having now beaten the Pies three times and have a win over Yarrawonga as well.

Wodonga Raiders stormed home to beat Myrtleford in a thrilling elimination final, scoring the winning goal from Emily Stewart with under a minute remaining.

With both team’s season survival on the line, it was the Raiders who held their nerve in an epic 57-56 victory with Australian under-17 star Mia Lavis shooting 34 goals and Stewart 15.

Lavis sat on the bench in the first quarter as the Saints at one stage led by seven goals. Her injection into the game sparked the Raiders who drew level 27 all at halftime and then 41 all at the last change.

In a pulsating final term, the lead changed several times as Stewart nailed the winning goal with thirty seconds left and then Raiders defender Eliza Mooney made a great intercept.

Mooney who was the winner of this year’s Under 17 Hot Shots Award, showed what she can do at A grade level and her versatility to play defence as well.

Sophie Hanrahan on her return from the Australian Netball Championships was outstanding with 38 goals while Saige Broz and Sally Botter were solid.
