Remember when? Round 14

This round in Remember When we go back 19 years to the inaugural year of the OMFNL Hall of Fame in 2005 that also featured one of the most dramatic finishes to an OMFNL grand final at Lavington.

Cleaver Bunton was immediately inducted as a Legend to the Hall of Fame – the other inductees were Norm Minns (Wang/Benalla), Bob Rose (Wang Rovers), Jim Sandral (Corowa) and Neville Hogan (Wang Rovers/Myrtleford/Wangaratta).

In the senior football grand final Myrtleford had their hearts broken when Lavington’s Darryn McKimmie slotted home a 35-metre set shot after the siren to post a one point win 10-12-72 to 11-5-71 – only the third time in the leagues history that a team kicking more gls that the opposition has lost the grand final. Corey Brown was awarded the Did Simpson medal for BOG.

In the reserves, Wodonga beat Rovers by 60 points and Wodonga also inflicted defeat on the Rovers in the thirds by 16 points. Current Myrtleford coach Craig Millar won the Doug Strang medal with 87 goals. Daniel Cassidy and Josh Mansell from Wodonga won the seconds and thirds goal kicking, respectively. The Rising Star Award went to Yarrawonga’s Mark Tyrell.

Myrtleford star midfielder Brad Murray took out the Morris Medal two votes clear of Simon McCormick (Wod) and Jason Lappin (Wang). The Leo Bourke in seconds was won by Wodonga’s Graeme Mathey and in the thirds, it was a win for current Wangaratta coach Ben Reid who in 2005 was playing with Wangaratta Rovers. He shared the win with Todd Birch from North Albury.

Wangaratta Rovers took out its third premiership since O&M Netball was founded in 1993 with a ten-goal win over defending premiers Wodonga. Myrtleford in this period had the most flags with four. In B Grade, Wodonga won its first ever premiership in that grade, beating Wodonga Raiders by four goals.

 In C Grade North Albury also beat Wodonga Raiders in a thriller by two goals. This was an amazingingly successful time for the Hoppers where they won nine premierships in eleven years between 2001 and 2011.

Stacey Emms from Wangaratta Rovers won the Toni Wilson Medal for best and fairest in A Grade, Emms would go onto win her second medal two years later. The B Grade best and fairest went to Marnie Jury from Albury and in C Grade Kylie Toner from Myrtleford was the winner.

North Albury took out the Anne Lawrence Netball Club Championship, while in the football it was Wodonga who won the Cleaver E. Bunton Club Championship.
