Round 1 Review
Massive round of the SSA OMFNL and it was the defending premiers Lavington who stole the limelight with a super impressive 13 point win over Myrtleford.
Touted by many to be into a rebuilding phase – the Panthers showed that they are right in finals mix with an all the way win under lights at Lavington Sportsground.
The lad from Yerong Creek Jack Driscoll led the way with three goals, while the importance of Tim Hanna was again evident with a dominating display for Lavington.
The improvement of the team young guns in Ben Ashley Cooper, Aiden Cook, Shaun Driscoll, Darcy Hennessy was very evident as the Panthers hunger outweighed the Saints.
Simon Curtis was one of the Saints best along with Mitch Dalbosco, Kurt Aylett and Hugh Wales in his first game of the season.
Veteran defenders Adam Butler and Brant Dickson were outstanding for the Panthers, with only Murray Waite three goals making an impact for the Saints.
The Wang Derby was a celebration of one of the leagues most durable players with Daine Porter getting exactly what he wanted – a big win over their big rival.
The Magpies registered one of the biggest derby wins for a long time with Abe Ankers booting seven goals and Cal Moore five. Wangaratta had thirty more inside fifties in a dominant performance.
Corowa Rutherglen have made it two from two with a big win over North Albury at Bunton Park. Jy and Jarred Lane had over sixty possessions between them for the Roos.
North Albury inaccuracy cost them dearly with just four goals being converted from twenty scoring shots. Clay Moscher Thomas was outstanding with thirty-four possessions.
The Hoppers continue to blood new players with Tim Broomhead, Fletcher Ramage, Isaac Campbell, Grady Nigsch and Hayden Cooper all on debut.
The Roos have a massive Easter Saturday home clash against Albury ahead of them and will go into the game full of confidence and the hope of an Easter upset.
Yarrawonga overcame the early enthusiasm and energy from the Wodonga Raiders to run out impressive winners at Birallee Park by 62 points.

The Pigeons were without Michael Gibbons and Leigh Williams. Neither are expected to be back for the Easter Sunday clash with Lavington at Mulwala.
Albury bounced back in typical Tiger fashion from its first-round loss to account for the much-improved Bulldogs from Wodonga by 48 points.
Leading the way was coach Anthony Miles, Fletcher Carroll, and Brayden Ohara in a very even Tiger team effort. Matt Walker booted five goals in his return.
A lot of interest surrounded the Bulldogs star recruits Angus Baker and Alex Smout – well they certainly did not disappoint with Baker 42 possessions and Smout 37.
Comfortable wins for the top sides highlighted round one of the netball with the closest margin over the five games being ten goal wins for Wangaratta and Albury.
Issy Byrne starred in mid court for the Pies, while new recruit Georgia Clarke shot twenty-six goals. The Rovers however continue to improve under coach Jo Cresswell.
The Lavington Panthers unveiled star recruit Emily Stewart in its thirty-three goal win over Myrtleford. Stewart combined well with Maddy Plunkett who shot 29 goals.
Seventeen-year-old Grace Hay continued her rise up the ranks with a brilliant display midcourt with nine intercepts the feature of a best on court effort.
Albury notched its first win of the season with a hard fought ten goal margin over Wodonga. Lilli Howe was the star with 27 goals, working alongside former coach Sarah Moore.
The Bulldogs after a slow start were not disgraced with another youngster Cassie Mathey drilling 30 of the Doggies thirty-four goals.
Any thoughts that Corowa Rutherglen may not be as strong as previous years are being quickly dispelled with the Roos dominating the Hoppers prevailing by twenty-eight goals.
The Roos after finishing runners up in 2019, were top of the table in 2021 when the season came to an end. They currently sit equal top with Wangaratta.
The Yarrawonga army got the job done against Wodonga Raiders with a twenty-one goal win. The Pigeons never looked back setting up the win with a dominant first quarter.
The Raiders were far from disgraced and will take so many positives out of the first up game against one of the title favourites.
